Laurie Stone: Finding Stakes in a Creative Piece of Writing
A Creative Writing Workshop for Narrative Prose (fiction, memoir, travel writing, performance texts)
Wednesday, Thursday & Saturday, April 9, 10 & 12
This workshop is structured around a premise: There is no such thing as an intrinsically interesting subject, and there is no such thing as an intrinsically uninteresting subject, either. A story isn't compelling because it happened in real life or might happen to fictional characters. Readers become engaged by the narrator's response to events-the thoughts and feelings that are kicked up during the telling. We get hooked on the speaker's way of looking at cause and effect and on the speaker's assessment of the relative size of things.
Where are there stakes for you? This is something the individual writer needs to discover, and that desire for self-understanding is part of the pleasure and passion driving creative writing. To find stakes in a story, a writer needs to become destabilized, moving away from comfort zones and pursuing an investigation that will lead to questions more than resolution.
We will meet for 3 afternoon sessions, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday from noon until 3pm in an atmosphere of experiment and trust. Writers will generate new texts from prompt exercises. You will finish with a new piece of high-stakes writing! This event was funded in part by Poets & Writers, Inc. with public funds from The New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency.
