Liaisons: Re-Imagining Sondheim from the Piano
Saturday, January 21 at 8 pm
Anthony de Mare is internationally recognized as one of the world's foremost champions of contemporary music. His latest project, Liaisons: Re-Imagining Sondheim from the Piano, is a landmark commissioning and concert project that expresses his vision to expand both the repertoire and the audience for contemporary music. With Liaisons, de Mare and producer Rachel Colbert have brought together 36 of today's most highly regarded emerging and established composers to create a solo piano piece based on a Sondheim song of their own choosing. Exclusive new works from Steve Reich, William Bolcom, Adam Guettel, Tania Leon, Ricky Ian Gordon, Paul Moravec, and Kenji Bunch, among others, will bring the work of musical theater maestro Stephen Sondheim while spanning the classical contemporary, jazz, film, theater and pop worlds. Currently on the roster of Yamaha Artists, he has been praised for his "muscularly virtuosic, remarkably uninhibited performance [and] impressive talents" (Anthony Tommasini, The New York Times). $20, $18 members.

The George Cole Quintet
One part Django Reinhardt...one part Michael Buble
Sunday, January 8 at 4 pm
The George Cole Quintet's superbly crafted and melodically sophisticated original music reminds us of the best of George Gershwin, Johnny Mercer, and Cole Porter. George's music suggests a hot sultry evening in a Parisian nightclub in the 1940's and the sophistication of master craftsman. The mix of high energy guitar playing, soaring violin flights by Julian Smedley, and propulsive "le pompe" rhythm guitar style creates a dynamic musical experience. He has performed at Carnegie Hall in New York and has dazzled audiences at a Grammy Artist's Showcase.
$20, $18 members.
The Tom Judson Show
with special guest Trixie Starr
Thursday, November 17, at 8 pm
Tom Judson brings his new solo cabaret act, "The Tom Judson Show", to Hudson for a one-night-only special performance to celebrate his fifty-first birthday. Getting back to his musician roots, Tom's new show is reminiscent of the sparkling entertainments that were once found at every smart supper club in Manhattan. Utilizing the skills that landed him on Broadway, Tom croons at the piano in a vintage tuxedo and sings an eclectic selection of songs from well known standards to some surprising obscure gems. And he peppers the musical selections with anecdotes and stories about some of the celebrities he's crossed paths with during his career.
The Tom Judson Show is an evening of song and story so entrancing that Michael Musto writing in the Village Voice insisted, "Let's get this man a show at the Carlyle Or the Algonquin. I'm serious!"
Tom Judson has appeared onstage as a singer, musician, actor and--in earlier days--as an object of lust and adoration. He has composed music for film (Whit Stillman's "Metropolitan") television ("Sesame Street") and has written songs for the likes of Ann Magnuson, Lisa Kron and others too numerous to mention. Lately he has been accompanist and second banana to drag chanteuse Varla Jean Merman. Has has been seen in the Broadway shows "Cabaret" and "42nd Street".

Jean Brassard and Steve Ross
Saturday, May 21, 2011 at 8:00 p.m.
Jean Brassard, well-known for his homage to Yves Montand, The Kid From Paris, and Steve Ross whom the New York Times simply calls "the crown prince of New York Cabaret," team up in this highly entertaining and very French soiree with humor, romance and savoir faire. $20 or $18 members.
Steve Ross rose to fame as a cabaret entertainer during his lengthy sojourns at New York's fabled Algonquin Hotel and Ted Hook's Backstage in the late 1970's. He has spent the ensuing decades singing and playing in smart clubs and swank parties all over the world. The Ritz in London, the Crillon in Paris and the Imperial Hotel Tokyo, in addition to festivals in Hong Kong, Perth and Spoleto – these are but highlights of Steve's appearances on six continents. On the airwaves Steve has been the performer/host for radio series for both the BBC and National Public Radio. In 1992 he was voted outstanding singer-instrumentalist by the Manhattan Association of Cabarets. Also in that year Steve made his Off-Broadway debut in his own tribute to Fred Astaire, I Won't Dance. He continues to tour in solo concerts, master classes, theatrical engagements and symphonic Pops appearances.
A New Yorker since 1982, Jean Brassard has been building a career on stage, television and film. He has been the New York-US correspondent on Radio-Canada's television show: La fosse aux lionnes. He is the voice of audio books, cartoon characters, perfume and cologne commercials on two continents. He appeared as Admiral d'Estaing in the acclaimed HBO mini series in David Garrett's screenplay/directorial debut, Ten Stories Tall. Brassard has performed twice with Steve Ross in his lecture concert series: The songs of Dietz and Schwartz alongside KT Sullivan and Americans in Paris in the Grace Rainey Rodgers Auditorium at New York's Metropolitan Museum. With string quartets by two of the great composers of our time, this program of new music explores creation, humanity, movement, and, of course, trains. Inspired by the myth of the Greek earth goddess Gaia, Stacy Garrop's String Quartet No. 3 is a lively evocation of the creation of the world. Steve Reich's timelessly beautiful work Different Trains questions the very concept of the string quartet. With sounds and spirits of survivors of the Holocaust, the piece is a meaningful meditation on the human soul. Free.
