In
5 short years Maude Maggart has gained a passionate following
from New York to Los Angeles, devoting herself to the rich legacy
of the classic music of George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Cole Porter
and Duke Ellington. Maggart says, “I’m very much at
home with this music, because even though it’s outwardly
simple, there’s tremendous complexity built into the songs.
It feels like I was born to sing them.”
Early
in her career music legend, Michael Feinstein played a key role
in the singer’s emergence. In 2001 Feinstein introduced
her to New York City audiences at the Regency Hotel cabaret that
bears his name. Feinstein says, “I think Maude has an unlimited
potential to branch out from cabaret into musical theater and
films because she has a brilliant voice that you don’t forget,
and an innate sense of drama that cannot be taught.”
Andrea
Marcovicci, the cabaret star also took Maggart under her wing,
helping her with song selection and creating stage acts. “I
have such a feeling when I hear this girl sing”, Ms. Marcovicci
said. “When she lands a song the right way, with that amazing
voice of hers, I sob from my bones.”
Born
in New York City into an illustrious show business family, Maude
Maggart’s parents are Broadway veterans, Brandon Maggart
& Diane McAfee, her grandmother starred in the Ziegfeld Follies
and her little sister is pop singing star Fiona Apple.
Maude
Maggart’s incredible singing style has received top critical
acclaim from The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The San
Francisco Chronicle, New York Daily News and The Village Voice.
Stephen Holden of The New York Times writes, “Wearing a
black dress, diamonds and high heeled shoes, Ms. Maggart suggests
a shadowy film-noir siren…who secretly moonlights as a nightclub
chanteuse and consorts with gangsters.”
In
2005 she received the prestigious Time Out New York Award for
Special Achievement and was featured on the cover of the magazine.
Reviewing her debut performance at New York’s venerable
Oak Room at the Algonquin Hotel, Time Out’s critic Adam
Feldman writes, “But it is Maggart’s gorgeous voice—which
ranges from a breathy, melancholic sigh to a high, pure vibrato—that
has made her the darling of the cabaret world. It’s a voice
straight out of the flapper era.”
Ms. Maggart’s recordings include her debut cd Look for the
Silver Lining (2003), Maude Maggart Sings Irving Berlin (2005)
With Sweet Despair (2005) and a new live recording “Come
Love” recorded during her recent engagement at the Oak Room.
Ms. Maggart performed live on the radio broadcast of Garrison
Keillor’s Prairie Home Companion show at Town Hall in New
York City and in June appeared on the show again live in Los Angeles
from the Hollywood Bowl.
