Hudson Opera House swings with Black and White Ball on September 24
Hudson, New York, August 31, 2011- The Hudson Opera House will hold its 18th annual benefit Gala on September 24, 2011 at Basilica Hudson on the waterfront in Hudson, New York. This year’s event is billed The Hudson Opera House: In Black and White, and its theme--attire and décor--is black and white, as is its jazzy invitation.
The event, kicking off with cocktail reception at 6:30, includes a catered dinner, dancing to live music, a silent auction, special performances and the premiere trailer of a new film about the Hudson Opera House. All proceeds from the event benefit the ongoing free programs and restoration of the Opera House.
Basilica Hudson’s new owners, Melissa Auf der Maur and Tony Stone, Nancy Barber and Bill Stone, host this year’s event. Basilica Hudson is the grand 19th century former factory building located on Front Street near the Hudson waterfront (http://basilicahudson.com). Under its new ownership, the building has undergone a name change, a facelift and has new amenities, all conducive to hosting the Hudson Opera House’s yearly Gala.
Co-chairs for the event are Ramzi Abufaraj and Keith Nuss, Michele Saunders Laine, and Thomas Froese, Chairman of the Hudson Opera House. In addition the Artist chair of the event is Rainer Judd and the Gala planning committee includes Hudson Opera House board members Carol Chinn, Marianne Courville, Paul Barrett and Thomas Froese. The event décor is in the talented hands of fashion and photo stylist Michele Saunders Laine and stylist, event and window display designer Geoff Howell, founder and owner of Geoff Howell Studio in NYC (http://geoffhowellstudio.com). The striking and fun invitation for the event was designed by artist and graphic design guru, Myron Polenberg (http://myronpolenberg.com).
Live Swing! Music and dancing returns to this year’s event featuring Jonathan Talbott and The Diamond Street Skinny Swing Band. Joining Jonathan and his band is the sensational vocalist and guitarist, Miss Tess (http://www.misstessmusic.com). Encompassing styles of vintage jazz, blues, country and folk, Miss Tess, who regularly tours with her own band, Miss Tess & The Bon Ton Parade, will perform in Hudson for the first time. Blog critic Holly Hughes said “To classify this singer-songwriter as merely a jazz singer would miss the point- she’s a musical chameleon, recalling at various moments Tom Waits’ barfly humor, the cabaret-rock of Beirut, or even the wink-wink wit of early Bette Midler.” You can learn more about Miss Tess by visiting her website at http://www.misstessmusic.com.
The Gala planning committee has orchestrated some special additions for the event. Surprise performances including Sheri Bauer-Mayorga’s Cross River Youth Chorale will punctuate the evening, and this year’s Silent Auction, organized by Paul Barrett, will be more varied than ever. The auction will feature donations from artists, including Tony Thompson, Richard Artschwager, and Arthur Yanoff, who have exhibited at the Hudson Opera House, as well as many other marvelous items donated from near and far. How about a fab bundle from the Warren Street shops BeLo3rd, a makeup makeover, dine-out opportunities at some of Hudson’s finest restaurants, designer jewelry, or a candlelight dinner onstage at the Hudson Opera House?
The evening will also feature the short trailer of a new film, The Hudson Opera House: In Black and White by Thomas Froese and Phil H. Yeh. The recently completed trailer features many pivotal people and images telling the story of the Hudson Opera House: its history, renovation, programming and the next stage to final completion of the grand upstairs auditorium. The film was a long time in coming according to chairman Froese: “This year, with the completion of the ‘upstairs’ so close at hand, I decided it was time, no matter what, to capture this exciting story on film. I am proud to have gotten it off its feet, and thrilled to be presenting the trailer at this year’s gala. As architect Marilyn Kaplan, consultant to the project from the beginning, says in the film, ‘The upstairs is…the heart of the building, and once completed it will change the lives of all those who know and benefit from the Hudson Opera House.’”
The Hudson Opera House offers a year-round schedule of arts and cultural programming in the 1855 former Hudson City Hall, which houses New York State’s oldest surviving theatre. Since opening the first restored “West” room in December 1997, five additional rooms on the first floor have been rehabilitated, within which thousands of cultural and educational programs have been presented, 1025 in the last year alone. The Hudson Opera House provides free or low-cost cultural offerings every week of the year. Ongoing programs include concerts, readings, lectures, exhibitions, theatre and dance presentations, after-school programs, workshops, classes and community arts events like the annual Winter Walk on Warren Street produced by the Hudson Opera House.
